Preventing Bee Drifting in Western Cape Pear Orchards

Bee drifting is one of the primary, yet often overlooked, causes of poor pollination and low fruit set in pear orchards across the Western Cape. When bees drift, it means they fail to distribute evenly across the orchard, instead concentrating in specific spots while leaving large areas under-pollinated. Understanding why this happens and how to prevent it is critical for any commercial grower.

What Is Bee Drifting?

Bee drifting occurs when foraging bees returning to the apiary enter the wrong hive. This typically happens when hives are placed in long, straight, uniform rows. Returning bees tend to drift toward the end hives of a row, which look more prominent or are easier to access. Over a few days, the end hives become heavily populated, congested, and sometimes aggressive, while the middle hives lose their foraging force and become weak.

This creates an imbalanced foraging pattern. Instead of bees spreading uniformly throughout the orchard block, foraging activity is concentrated around the ends of the rows, leaving the center of the block neglected.

Why Pears Are Especially Vulnerable

Pear blossoms produce nectar with a very low sugar concentration—typically between 10% and 15%. In comparison, plums, wild flowers, and weeds produce nectar with sugar levels upwards of 30% to 50%. Because honeybee scouts communicate using nectar sugar ratios, they are highly sensitive to sweetness. If competing forage is available nearby, bees will easily abandon pear trees in favor of sweeter resources.

This makes pears extremely difficult to pollinate. If bees drift to the edge of the blocks or face linear navigation paths, they are much more likely to fly out of the orchard in search of sweeter weeds or wild flowers, leading to failed fruit set.

Circular Hive Clustering: The Solution

Instead of placing hives in long rows, beekeepers should group them in circular clusters of 4 to 10 hives. In a circle, the hive entrances point in different directions, and the outline is irregular. Correct Orchard Placement

In addition to clustering, placement location is critical. Hives must be placed INSIDE the orchard blocks, not on the outer perimeters or roadsides. Placing hives deep inside the blocks forces the bees to land on and sample pear blossoms immediately upon leaving the hive before they can spot sweets elsewhere.
